Dust is everywhere in your house – at least, that’s how it seems sometimes. By maintaining a consistent cleaning schedule, you can keep your house cleaner and improve your indoor air quality at the same time. Here are ten places in your home where dust can accumulate:
Pillows, Sheets, and Blankets
Pillows, sheets, and blankets can harbor dust mites that can trigger allergic reactions while you spend time in bed. Using anti-allergy bedding can help, as can regular washing of these bedding items.
Curtains and Blinds
Curtains and blinds need to be cleaned regularly in order to prevent dust from building up on them. Vacuum these surfaces with a vacuum extension at least once per month. Washing your curtains may be easiest if your curtains are machine washable.
Bottom of Toilet
The bottom of the toilet accumulates germs of all kinds, including dust. This area of your toilet needs to be cleaned with the rest of your bathroom. If you can get your bathroom cleaned once per week, you’ll be on top of life!
Baseboards and Molding
Baseboards and molding collect dust quickly, especially around the floor. Try to clean the baseboards at least once per month, and the molding near the ceiling at least once every two months, to prevent little cobwebs from becoming a problem.
Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans accumulate dust quickly because they capture dust as it flies through the air. Use a pillowcase to clean your ceiling fans – just put the pillowcase around the ceiling fan blade, then pull the dust right off! Do this at least once monthly, to prevent your ceiling fan from circulating dirt around your home.
On Top and Under Furniture
It’s important to clean under furniture at least once monthly, and the top of your furniture more often. If you’re doing it yourself, use a microfiber cloth to pick up the worst of the dirt. If you’re hiring a professional, they’ll know exactly what to do!
HVAC Filters
HVAC filters need to be replaced at least once every three months as long as your HVAC system is in use. Replacing your HVAC filter can help keep your air clean.
Indoor Plants
Indoor plants can get very dusty. Try misting your indoor plants with water from time to time, then use a clean microfiber cloth to dry off the leaves.
Dryer
Clean your dryer lint trap every time you use your dryer, and hire a handyman to clean your dryer vent at least once annually. Dryer dust can and lint can cause fires – this is an important safety issue!
Shelves and Ledges
Clean on shelves and ledges every other time you decide to dust to prevent items on your shelves from getting too dusty.
